The future of high-performance coatings

Our agile response to approaching PFAS bans.

A proposed EU-wide ban on Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) continues to gain momentum. These PFAS – often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ in ESG reports – are used extensively to protect critical components deployed in harsh environmental conditions. If adopted, the ban will create significant upheaval to manufacturing processes, supply chains and project delivery.

First submitted by Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in January 2023 to restrict PFAS under the REACH chemicals legislation, this suggested ban will stop the production, use and placing on the market of approximately 10,000 substances used across critical-industry applications. What’s more, a global trend for implementing similar legislation is gathering pace in other regions including the UK, US, China, Canada and beyond.

In a positive update, the LoneStar Group is already adapting to this changing context, enabling our global customers to pre-empt and successfully navigate legislative turmoil in advance.

Staying ahead of global disruption.
As a market-leading coating applicator, the LoneStar Group has a proven track record of delivering corrosion-resistant components that ensure asset integrity within the world’s most extreme conditions. Because of this, we’re committed to anticipating regulatory changes to ensure we retain our excellent reputation for compliance, safety, product quality and sustainability. We do this by constantly monitoring market conditions, analysing regulations, staying abreast of the latest technological innovations and updating our customers on compliant future-focused strategies.

Our world protects your coated critical component supply chain.
The LoneStar Group has already responded to this latest PFAS update by adjusting our processes and practices globally.

Despite being in the ‘mid-term’ of this transition – which can take up to three years from proposal submission to ban implementation – we’re already working in conjunction with leading coating manufacturers to develop new techniques and trial next-generation, high-performance PFAS compliant systems.

One such breakthrough technology being adopted by the LoneStar Group is PPG’s Xylan 2.0 coating systems. PFAS free and formulated using proprietary low-friction technology, the Xylan 2.0 range is corrosion, chemical and abrasion resistant. This safe and sustainable innovation is already being deployed in automotive, energy, as well as oil and gas sectors worldwide.

In addition, our expert teams are also supplying customers with historic supply chain data, allowing them to understand where PFAS are present and what future restrictions may occur to increase understanding and minimise disruption.

Operating at the forefront of industry, together.
With our commitment to ongoing awareness, problem-solving, continuous training and proactive collaboration, we’re continuing to ensure every coated, plated, approved and accredited component surpasses our customers’ operational needs. Able to coat and plate any product, whether standard or bespoke, to any size or specification, our world strengthens yours.

Our CBAM commitment

Working with suppliers and customers to decarbonise our world.
Successfully navigating the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) with speed and accuracy is of vital importance to the LoneStar Group and our customers. Lead by our in-house sales and procurement experts, we’re openly collaborating with external partners within our supply chain to accurately gather and deliver first-right-time CBAM data requirements. Our aim? To mitigate the multiple risks that this new regulation may present.

Meeting the EU’s low carbon goals.
CBAM was introduced in October 2023 by the European Union (EU) to tax the production of carbon intensive goods entering the territory. Its goal is to encourage cleaner industrial practices in non-EU countries with a view to cutting emissions by at least 55% by 2023. CBAM therefore aims to ensure the carbon price of imports is equivalent to that of domestic production. Ultimately protecting the EU's climate or domestic market objectives from carbon leakage; a scenario where production moves outside of the EU to avoid climate-related policies before untaxed goods are imported back in.

CBAM covers imports of cement, iron, steel, aluminium, hydrogen, fertilisers and electricity with the potential for further expansion. Importers of these goods will be required by law to report the associated emissions and pay for CBAM certificates. The price of these will be linked to the carbon price under the Emissions Trading System (ETS).

Reporting on a new reality.
As a supplier of several CN codes covered by this decarbonisation initiative, the LoneStar Group is responsible for delivering the correct CBAM data to our EU customers and importers. In a positive update, ~80% of our suppliers, including ~90% of our non-EU suppliers, now provide the required carbon emissions data to meet CBAM’s requirements.

As the phased introduction of CBAM rolls out – reaching completion in 2026 – we continue to guide our trusted global supply chain to close any remaining data gaps, increase reporting accuracy and prepare them to manage any potential cost implications of the evolving policy.

‘Being compliant with CBAM is vital to our business. We can’t hide away from the fact that we’ve had to adapt quickly to the onerous reporting. We’re not alone in facing these challenges and we hold an unwavering commitment to delivering compliant information. In fact, we now see our expert understanding of CBAM and other regulations as a competitive edge for the LoneStar Group and our customers.’ Luke Brown. Group ESG Manager. The LoneStar Group.

In-house expertise. Future opportunity.
Crucially, through our reporting rigour and existing experience of surpassing the needs of numerous global critical-industry compliance requirements, we’re able to ensure our downstream partners avoid any CBAM financial penalties or disruptive delays at borders.

While we recognise that the reporting of CBAM data is resulting in additional time, effort and associated costs relating to our products and services, CBAM and its muted 2027 UK equivalent does create new opportunity for us all. By scrutinising supply chains to seek preferable trade-offs between cost and carbon or working more closely with partners to understand their ESG strategies, the LoneStar Group is uniquely placed to exceed the economic and environmental requirements of international policy makers into the future.

Global long service

Nurturing stability in our expert teams, products and services.

The LoneStar Group employs over 1,300 people worldwide across 13 business units. Operating as one team, this expanding community is built on a foundation of global long service, where exceptional levels of workforce retention strengthen our unmatched capabilities. In many cases, our employees remain within the organisation for most of their careers, showing an enduring commitment to colleagues and customers alike.

To explore this lasting loyalty in greater detail and understand its far-reaching benefits, we spoke to Clelia Cayama, Global Director of Human Resources for the LoneStar Group. Responsible for leading our people strategy into an exciting future, Clelia’s role is vital to prolonging our ongoing success as a welcoming, ambitious and highly-skilled organisation. Whether leading recruitment, career development, reward schemes, implementing modern HR initiatives that enable us to thrive through periods of change or being a confidante to all, Clelia and her global team strengthen our world.

Hi Clelia, can you explain the vital importance of our people strategy?
The LoneStar Group is built on our people. It’s their knowledge, experience, skillsets, integrity and strong industry relationships that drive us forward. More than that, our people are vital to the identity of the organisation. It’s their daily interactions, collaborative spirit and eagerness to strive for excellence that we’re most proud of.

To nurture this productive environment, we’re continuously investing in our people as well as recruiting top industry talent and supporting them all to forge a fulfilling career. It’s important to promote from within too, leveraging every opportunity to advance the careers of our high-potential employees whose growing aptitude will eventually lead our future teams.

There’s a trend of global long service across the entire group, why is that?
Visiting our sites and meeting new people, it was inspiring how many individuals have spent a lifetime with us; as was their pride in being part of the organisation, their passion for what they do and how respected they are.

Over 180 people, or 15% of our global team, have been with us for 10 years. 115 have been with us for between 16 and 20 years, while 40 have been part of our journey for more than 25 years. This incredible stability speaks volumes about the LoneStar Group. It’s a great place to work, full of experience and collaborative relationships.

How do these stable teams, full of expertise, strengthen our customer offering?
The continuity of world-leading skills and understanding within the LoneStar Group is priceless for us, our customers and the wider industry. It’s about nurturing trust and integrity. We trust in our own abilities, which further strengthens the trust our customers have in our people, products, services, reliability and proven excellence.

Does global long service benefit apprentices and new starters too?
Of course. But it also benefits those already on their career journey within the organisation. Knowledge sharing across levels of seniority and departments helps everyone. Whether that’s the 20 new apprentices we’ve welcomed into our UK teams this year, or being able to promote existing employees into more senior roles. Illuminating a clear path to collective success is key for everyone within the extended LoneStar Group.  We want everyone to understand that they can, and do, make positive impacts when going the extra mile.

What are your people and investment ambitions for the future?
We’re implementing an innovative HR System that we plan to expand globally. This will automate some of our HR processes and free our team to focus on face-to-face interactions. We’re also launching a new Long Service Award Program to recognise the outstanding commitment of our people.

Thanks Clelia. Finally, how can candidates explore a career at the LoneStar Group?
I’d encourage all future candidates to visit our new global website and follow our LinkedIn page for the latest roles and updates. Of course, all internal colleagues can continue to speak with their HR teams for any support or further information.

Operating at the cutting-edge.

Announcing our latest API manufacturing accreditation.
The LoneStar Group is now compliant with API 20E 3rd Edition through its regional manufacturing locations. This update complements and further enhances our extensive API approvals and accreditations across the entire global LoneStar Group (see API Composite List for details).

A legacy of excellence.
API was formed in 1919 as a standards-setting organisation and remains the global leader in convening subject matter experts across segments to establish, maintain and distribute consensus standards for the oil and gas industry. In its first 100 years, API has developed more than 800 standards to enhance operational safety, reduce waste, increase efficiencies, bring products to market quicker and improve environmental protection across the global industry. In 2017, API added the requirement of standards 20E and 20F for the qualification, production and documentation for bolting used in the petroleum and natural gas industries.

As a partner to many of the world’s foremost oil and gas majors, the LoneStar Group has always stayed abreast of the latest updates from API, ensuring we continue to strengthen our legacy of manufacturing and supplying industry-leading products.

Specification requirements.
API 20E 3rd Edition specifies requirements for the qualification, production, and documentation of alloy and carbon steel bolting used in the petroleum and natural gas industries. This 3rd Edition accreditation differs from the outgoing 2nd Edition by establishing three bolted joint specification levels – BSL1, BSL2, and BSL3 – with increasing levels of technical, quality and qualification requirements. The API Monogram Program’s effective date was March 7, 2025.

To achieve this latest accreditation, LoneStar Fasteners Hydrobolt (LSFH), has redemonstrated that our robust and internationally recognised quality management systems are compliant with API Spec Q1. In addition, further qualification testing on our extensive raw materials stockholding and in-house manufacturing processes ensures our compliance meets or exceeds the relevant API quality specifications from purchasing through to job completion.

‘Having achieved API 20E 3rd Edition accreditation demonstrates our ongoing dedication to innovative leadership in the industry. It will increase our customers’ trust in our products while strengthening their own reputation for quality and reliability.’ Brad Collins, Divisional Quality and Compliance Director. LoneStar Fasteners Hydrobolt Ltd.

‘API 20E 3rd Edition enhances standardisation, consistency and quality assurance of critical bolting materials, significantly reducing the risks of catastrophic consequences within the world’s harshest environments.’  Jose Rodriguez. Methods and Quality Manager. Lonestar Fasteners, Houston.

Rigour. Strength. Integrity.
Always striving for the highest possible levels of excellence, our API 20E 3rd Edition capabilities are now operational. Extensive training programmes have already been completed across all specification levels, meaning our global team – aided by their unmatched technical understanding – can respond to any API requests of blue-chip oil and gas customers.

In-country manufacturing

Our global capabilities strengthen your strategic advantage.

In the face of evolving geopolitics, trade agreements, tariffs and environmental considerations, in-country manufacturing – also known as domestic or onshore – is of growing importance to our customers. Considered a more controlled approach to the production of goods, in-country manufacturing unlocks many unseen benefits and can mitigate numerous international risks, motivating more of our customers to seek guidance on how to access this increasingly critical service.

To explore how 13 global LoneStar Group business units operate as one to surpass our customers’ in-country manufacturing requirements across key markets, we spoke to Steve Kettle, VP MENA APAC, part of the LoneStar Group. Responsible for leading international sales teams and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, Steve has first-hand experience of unlocking the full potential of in-country manufacturing across the globe.

Hi Steve, what makes our In-country manufacturing services so compelling for customers?

The key factors include shorter lead times, optimised responsiveness, enhanced quality control and safety standards, local job creation, ESG advantages, supply chain resilience and an enhanced ability to stay ahead of global trade dynamics.

There’s a myriad of details and additional industry contexts around each of these factors, which I’d encourage people to discuss with our team. But to summarise, we're fully committed to aligning with our customers' evolving strategic needs by providing in-country manufacturing solutions anywhere in the world, driven by unmatched flexibility, responsiveness and expertise.

There’s an increasing focus on import tariffs in 2025. Can our in-country manufacturing capabilities save our customers money?

Yes. It offers our customers a clear strategic advantage, enabling them to navigate a highly volatile geopolitical landscape that’s full of unpredictable global trade policies. Recently, this volatility has risen further with a range of new duties, levies and tariffs across marketplaces. Manufacturers in the USA who rely on steel imports are also experiencing increased operational and supply costs.

In this context, the LoneStar Group is uniquely positioned to help customers mitigate costs by accessing our in-country manufacturing and global supply chain capabilities located across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Australasia, plus Central and Southeast Asia. Customers operating within these markets can enjoy greater supply chain resilience and potentially avoid the brunt of international trade tariffs.

Does in-country manufacturing benefit certain industries more than others?
Our in-country capabilities are in high demand across numerous critical industries, particularly those requiring precision-engineered, high-performance approved and accredited components for mission-critical applications.

For arguments sake, let’s look at defence. A major contractor might require locally produced fasteners for military applications to ensure ultimate supply chain resilience and compliance with national security regulations. The nuclear industry also demands the highest quality components delivered with stringent safety requirements. In-country manufacturing therefore becomes an attractive, trusted and proven option for our customers.

Can in-country manufacturing positively influence the ESG strategies of the LoneStar Group and our customers?

Absolutely. By embracing in-country manufacturing with a focus on ESG principles, the LoneStar Group and our customers can achieve sustainable growth, enhance operational efficiency and maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly ESG-conscious market.

The ESG benefits of in-country manufacturing include reduced carbon emissions through decreased transportation needs, the adoption of localised circular economy principles, more efficient use of resources, waste reduction, increased social responsibility with oversight of local working conditions and improved supply chain traceability. All vital elements for supporting our customers’ sustainability goals.

What can customers expect when accessing in-country manufacturing from us?
We’re able to tailor all our unrivalled global capabilities and a comprehensive suite of services to surpass our customers’ specific needs; whether in-country manufacturing or otherwise. As a trusted partner, we collaborate with customers on a one-to-one basis. Navigating challenges together to find appropriate solutions and deliver outstanding results at speed, anywhere on the planet.

I’d encourage our existing customers, or any prospects to contact me directly to discuss the benefits of in-country manufacturing in detail.
